Mini Heaven Farms Old English Babydoll Southdowns
|

The Olde English Babydoll Southdowns are one of the oldest of the English breeds of sheep,
originating on the South Down hills of Sussex County, England. They produced meat with unmatched
tenderness and flavor then any other breed of sheep.
The breed reached the United States around 1803. As the popularity grew the small Southdown could
not satisfy the demand for larger meat cuts, thus the development and mass production of the larger,
leggier Southdown of today. This was the beginning of what became two distinct lines: The
Southdown and the miniature (or original) Old English Babydoll Southdown. Each year brought a
further decline in the number of the "original" Southdowns and at one point they were believed to be
extinct.
Olde English Babydoll Southdowns are great pets who produce wool in the 19 to 22 micron range,
which puts the fleece in the class of cashmere.. They also provide organic weeding and make excellent
companions for the young, elderly, and disabled. Their gentle nature makes them a joy to own, and
their diminutive size makes them an excellent choice for 4-H projects. Their smiling woolly teddy bear
face will give everyone a smile. They are ideal for suburban lot owners who want the tranquility of
sheep as living lawn ornaments. Because Babydoll Southdowns are a ancient breed, they are not prone
to many of the modern sheep problems and are resistant to foot rot.

Some of our 2009 babies. The geese
were very protective of the lambs and
treated them as their own too. Of
course, our black ram Buckwheat also
helped the geese with their young so
they were one big family!
Buckwheat getting ready to egg-sit.
Whenever the geese went to get a
drink and water, you would find
Buckwheat sitting on their eggs and
keeping them warm. It was amazing -
he didn't even break one!
Their wooly faces were so adorable,
but we found it necessary to trim their
faces in between shearing to keep the
wool out of their eyes. Leroy's was
especially baaaaaaaaad . . .
"Hey!!! We can see again! Wow,
what was that flash of light!?!"
